The popularity of mini solar systems for balconies continues to grow! There are now over 560,000 balcony power plants installed in Germany. Tenants in particular can benefit from the small solar systems: thanks to a simple self-installation of 60 minutes, the balcony power plants are significantly cheaper than conventional systems and the self-produced solar power significantly reduces annual electricity costs.

We compare the balcony power stations from the best manufacturers for you and help you find the best deal. Discover the different sets from top brands, benefit from the best prices and get free shipping & returns in the Ostrom Store. Generate your own electricity in 2024, gain independence from the electricity market, and lower your energy costs.

The essentials in brief:

Balcony power stations or plug-in solar devices are small solar systems that you can install on your balcony, in your garden or on your flat roof. You can easily install them yourself by simply plugging them into a socket.

Solar package 1: The law passed in April 2024 [LINK] has made access to balcony power plants much easier. You no longer need to register with the grid operator, your inverter can now have an output of 800 watts and your landlord (or the WEG) can no longer prohibit you from having a balcony power plant.

Reduce your electricity costs: With a balcony power plant, you can save up to several hundred euros annually in electricity costs. The savings depend on the actual production of your solar modules, your consumption and your electricity tariff. A balcony power plant pays for itself in an average of 3-5 years. It can also be done quickly if you can apply for funding (see funding overview).

About Ostrom: In the Ostrom Store, you will find balcony power plants from top brands and benefit from free shipping and returns. You can also integrate some balcony power plants into our Ostrom app. There you can view your electricity production and adjust your electricity consumption to increase your self consumption. The Ostrom App helps you reduce your electricity costs even further!

Balcony solar system: Everything you need to know!

Each balcony solar set consists of three components:

  • The solar panel
  • The inverter
  • The bracket

The solar panel converts the sun's energy into electricity. This depends on how many watts (power) the module has. However, it is important to note that this is the maximum power that can be achieved in perfect conditions. If the sun is not shining as brightly, if the power plant is not perfectly aligned, or if there are many clouds in the sky, the maximum power cannot be achieved. In short, it is almost impossible to achieve maximum power.

It may be a good idea to buy a solar panel with a higher output (e.g. 1240 watts) than the 800 watts allowed. This will enable you to achieve the maximum allowed power input of the system of 800 watts, even in less-than-optimal conditions. The inverter will automatically feed only 800 watts into your home grid.

The inverter converts the direct current produced into an alternating current, which you can use to power your household appliances. At the same time, its power limit of max. 800 watts protects your home electronics and the public power grid.
The bracket provides secure mounting and allows you to position the solar panel at the ideal angle to the sun. You can choose a bracket for your balcony, flat roof or garden. You can also mount it on a wall or pitched roof.

Is it even worth it (financially)?

As well as producing CO2-free electricity, balcony solar panels can also reduce your electricity bills. For example, a 300 watt set can save you around 90 € a year on your electricity bill. The important factors that determine your electricity production and your cost savings are:

  1. the orientation of your balcony power plant (north, east, south, west),
  2. your self consumption, and
  3. the angle to the sun.

Depending on how well you control these factors, your investment will pay for itself in 4-6 years. If you also have the option of applying for funding, the payback period is reduced to 0-2 years.

What funding is available for balcony power plants?

Subsidies for balcony solar systems vary from region to region. Most subsidy programs are set up directly by the city. Therefore, it is best to check your city's website to see if purchasing a balcony solar system is subsidised.

What happens to the electricity produced?

The electricity produced is used directly by your appliances, such as the fridge, router, washing machine and all your other appliances. If your Balcony Power Plant produces more electricity than you can use, the excess is fed back into the grid. This means that even if you are not using the CO2-free solar power yourself, you are making our electricity grid greener.

Do I need to ask my landlord for permission?

No, balcony solar power systems are considered a "privileged structural change" and you have the right to install a plug-in solar system without the landlord or condominium association being able to simply refuse. However, you should still inform your landlord, as he must inform the condominium owners' association (WEG). They can decide what the system should look like to maintain a uniform appearance.
